Individual & Family Mine Tours

Sterling Hill offers one public tour daily for individuals and families. The tour begins at 1:00 PM every day the museum is open. 

Spring, Summer & Fall Schedule

During the spring, summer, and autumn we are open seven days a week and offer public tours every day.

Tour Costs (as of 2011)

$10.00 for Adults,
$9.00 for Seniors
$8.00 for Children 12 and under.

Unless you are bringing a group of 10 or more you do not need reservations — simply show up shortly before 1:00 PM to purchase your tickets. For large family groups (10 or more people) please see the section on Group tours.

Payment can be made by cash or check upon arrival at the museum. We also accept money orders, credit cards (Visa and MasterCard only), and traveler’s checks. If paying in cash, please have all the cash for your family and friends collected prior to arrival.

General Information

Guided tours last about two hours and include one hour in the underground zinc mine, half an hour in our large exhibit hall, and about 10 minutes in our museum of fluorescence.

Visitors are welcome to view our outdoor exhibits of mining equipment on the parking-lot level on their own, but entry to the mine and any of our buildings except for the gift shop/ticket sales area requires the presence of a tour guide. Self-guided tours are NOT allowed.

Please note that regardless of the weather or season it is a cool 56° in the mine, so make sure you bring with you a light jacket or sweater, even in summer. Sturdy footwear is also advisable. While in the mine you will be walking on a hard-packed gravel surface.

Our museum features indoor as well as outdoor sheltered picnic tables, modern restroom facilities, a snack bar, and a fully stocked gift shop.
